Endoscopy unit
The unit has so far performed about 6,600 upper GI endoscopies, 3,600 colonoscopies and 500 ERCP's. The unit has become the preferred referral center for management of GI emergencies. A 24hr GI bleed care center, ably supported by an efficient blood bank with component separation facilities and the state of the art ICU, is one of the hall marks of this unit. The availability of Hemoclip applicator and Argon Beam Coagulator in addition to EVL and sclerotherapy has been crucial to the success of the unit in such cases. In ulcer bleeds , the unit has one of the largest experience in the country using Endoscopic band ligation for control of bleed.
Apart from the GI emergencies , the unit has been performing biliary and pancreatic endotherapy routinely . The routine biliary endotherapy done by the unit include stone extraction , biliary stent and nasobiliary drainage placement . The unit has the maximum experience in management of biliary ascariasis in Kerala. The unit is one of the few centers performing pancreatic endotherapy in Kerala. Pancreatic stent placement , minor papilla sphincterotomy and pancreatic cystoduodenostomy / cystogastrostomy are done in the unit.
Palliation of dysphagia by endoscopic methods is an area where the unit has been able to provide much help to the needy . The unit has performed more than 30 endoscopic self expanding metallic stent placement for inoperatble esophageal tumours and also has good experience in alcohol lumenisation for proliferative obstructive lesions of esophagus. Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomies are performed using standard commercial kits and also in house manufactured tubes.
