Surgery concerned with the treatment of infants and children.

This department in conjunction with department of Paediatrics and Neonatology provides comprehensive care of the surgical neonate, infant and child. From the day of birth to the age of 13 years, all surgical conditions in the child are managed in this department.

This includes congenital disorders (birth disorders), infective, traumatic and neoplastic conditions, which need surgery such as, cleft lip and palate, anomalies of the ano-rectum, kidney, ureter and bladder, hypospadias, anomalies of the gastro intestinal system etc.

These surgeries include both the conventional open surgery as well as endoscopic (keyhole) surgery's of the chest and abdomen.

Children have a tendency to put various objects with their mouth, which can get lodged in the throat, esophagus or bronchus causing various problems. These are removed endoscopically using the oesophagoscope or bronchoscopes.

Obstruction to the urethra by a congenital condition called posterior urethral valves are treated by single stage primary fulgration the valves. Diversion is only done in rare indicated causes.

In addition to surgical treatment, the department also run an antenatal counseling clinic where in pregnant mothers with abnormalities of the fetus detected before delivery are seen, investigated and counseled about their baby, its overall prognosis, management etc. In addition advice is also given with regards to the management of this pregnancy and also further pregnancies.

Paediatric malignancies are surgically diagnosed and treated surgically as indicated. Chemotherapy is also given as per standard protocols in such cases.

A childhood condition called intussusception, which causes intestinal obstruction is treated by pneumatic insufflation, a non-operative technique. This condition, earlier used to be treated by surgery but now using this non operative techniques over 90 % of the cases are managed without surgery.

Thus the department gives a one-stop management of almost all surgical conditions in the child.
