Physical measures in the treatment of pathological conditions, injuries, and physical anomalies.

Rehabilitation medicine was conceived with the need to restore the disabled patient back into the social mainstream. To emphasize this concept, this hospital has had a full-fledged Physical medicine department headed by a physiatrist and manned by qualified physiotherapists from its very beginning.

The department having an area of 3026 sq ft is one of the largest such departments in the state and is equipped with all the electrotherapy equipment like shortwave, ultrasound and Interferential therapy, hydro collator, wax bath, CPM, stimulator, traction system. Exercise equipment for mobilization, strengthening and balance training help to cater to a wide range of patients from Orthopaedic, Neurology and other departments. Spaciously housed in a cool and comfortable atmosphere, and well ventilated, it provides the right kind of ambience for the handicapped and disabled to rejuvenate their mind and body.

Scientifically based individualized programme for each patient without any time constraints is the distinguishing feature of this Department.

Orthopaedics
the Department specializes in protocol-based rehabilitation for the arthroplasty patients, spinal injury, ligament injury and post fracture care. Hand injuries and rehabilitation are indispensable associations and the department is adequately equipped to deal with this very important aspect of orthopaedic rehabilitation.
Neurology and Neurosurgery
neuronal plasticity is the scientific basis on which the rehabilitation of Stroke and brain injury patients is founded. The department caters to this by having specific equipment and well trained physiotherapists.
Paediatric
the department is part of the child development clinic of MIMS, formed with the notion of early diagnosis and intervention. It offers neurodevelopment techniques and necessary orthotic intervention for the cerebral palsied children.
Rheumatology
Pain relieving measures and patient education regarding joint protection are the highlights.
Obstetrics
Patients have the benefit of receiving advice regarding postnatal exercises backed by information leaflet.
Pain management
this very important, but long neglected aspect of rehabilitation is a specialty of the department. Working in tandem with other clinical departments, the department has effective and well-proven methods in making a proper diagnosis and managing pain using the various modalities along with exercises. The patients are educated about the pain mechanism and ergonomics.
Vertigo
it is now being recognized that peripheral vertigo is best-managed using techniques of manipulation and exercises. This very distressing symptom is being managed along with the ENT department and has one of the largest series of patients treated by such methods. Long-term dependence on drugs by these unfortunate sufferers is largely reduced by these methods.
Cardiac rehabilitation & Chest physiotherapy are also ancillary services offered by the Physical Medicine department in association with the respective departments. This is important as MIMS has one of the best Cardiac surgery departments in the country. The large ICU, again one of the largest ICU's in the country, makes chest physiotherapy essential for many patients for early recovery.
